I took Frans Clinic because I wanted to improve my walking posture. The results have been wonderful. After my second session of learning how to use my feet and legs more effectively for walking, I decided to walk 9 miles without my knee brace which I had relied on for the last 2 years. I run marathons and use the Galloway run-walk method. I am now 72 years old and as I have gotten older I find that I am running less and walking more. In order to keep my marathon times from slowing too much I took Fran Bustos’s race walking series in 2008. It has helped me a lot. Since her course I have completed over 20 marathons and thought about Fran as I walked in each. When on a walk break, I imagine that I am going through the motions that Fran taught me. In the early part of marathon when I go on a walk break a lot of the runners say “Boy you sure can walk fast”. And toward the end of marathons, when I find that I am even walking more, I tend to pass quite a few others who have run out of gas. When I use both running and walking I save energy to use toward the end of the marathon.

The only running I do where I don’t use Fran’s walking technique is when I run track. And even there I race walk during the intervals. To practice Fran’s technique I use it often. Like when I am walking to and from church, to and from the ATM. I use her technique when walking the long corridors at airports. (I am running marathons in different states and I do a lot of airline traveling). And when I arrive at Target and really need to go I race walk from the car to the in-store restroom.

I am training for my first marathon, and I have a long history of both low back and knee pain. I did a 1-hour private session with Fran to improve my walking posture and learn the racewalking technique. Two days later, I just completed a 9-mile walk through hilly terrain … with no low-back pain. Looking forward to continued success and completing the L.A. Marathon in March.
